Discap Masters tournament?

Post by Mel » Mon Feb 17, 2020 10:48 am

Any plans for a Masters age tourney for Discap in the near future? Within the next couple years?
Any thoughts on this?

All the local tourneys offer Masters divisions. Why not just sign up for one of those? Why have a tourney that is age exclusive? Just curious, for discussion sake.

Most local tournaments have very limited "Masters" divisions especially if you are over age 60. Men have more "Masters" options then Women. In fact all Discap tourneys I've seen listed only have three options for women; FPO, FA1 & FA2. No Masters divisions.
A "Masters" tourney usually is also more friendly in terms of course distance and holes played for older players.

Understandable, the TD's i'm sure would be glad to open up those divisions if they aren't initially available. Typically based on desire.

That said if there was a large audience interested in a "shorter" tournament, I'm sure something could be set up to facilitate that need.

Just an opinion and will certainly be glad to admit im wrong if so, but it doesn't seem like there is much appeal for a masters only tournament in this area to support the effort this would entail. Maybe I'm wrong.

Actually a great idea.
Even better if the younger players would run it so the Masters level players could relax and play it.

As for a Ladies Masters division, I would gladly offer it as soon as we have the numbers to support it. Currently I'm only aware of Mel and Vickie being eligible.
EDIT: I just checked the Blatnick Breeze FA2 division and there are 4 Masters-eligible players signed up. So going forward, I will be offering a FP40 & FA40 at DisCap tournaments.

Thanks for considering a Masters Tourney in the future.
I can think of a few more Masters aged women players that might be interested in a MA40 division. Initials for privacy.
1.MF
2.MP
3.CB
I don't believe you need a FPO40 division at this point. Very few women players sign up as Pro in local tournaments. They usually hit the big tourneys where they have competition in their division and can win a larger cash purse.

Agreed that FP40 is locally unnecessary but since all our events are NEFA sanctioned and we normally bring in players from 4-5 hours away, there COULD be pro ladies out there that would play.
Added both to the April Showers 15 pre reg(goes live March 13th @ 8pm).

Now the next questions...… when and where to hold the Inaugural DisCap Masters ?

Course is up to Discap Masters age players to decide.
My input is that it can't be more than 36 holes. Either one day of 36 or two days of 18.
Women should play a shorter age appropriate course.

At least i'd get to play the local masters tourneys too :)

If you wanted a shorter somewhat flat course, thacher wouldn't be a bad idea.

Hi Brian, I don't think we have met yet?
Yes, Thacher is another good option. I play that course regularly.
But... I believe Shen Creek is better.
It's within 5 miles of the Northway for ease of transportation.
I think Shen Creek is free? Thacher has a $6 parking fee from May-Oct.
Shen has good parking and a pavillion to rent.
It's also well located within the Capital District area.
The course is not fully developed yet, but might be by September? That's a great month for a Masters tourney in my opinion.

Shen Creek does have all those amenities and is free to enter but I believe there is a fee for pavilion use.
As far as having the course tournament ready, I would hope that it will be ready by September but I can't make any promises at this point.
We'd definitely have to plan ahead to ensure the rugby field is not being used that day.

It's totally up to You and the DisCap board of directors if you want to go forward on this.
I Thank You for considering.

Yes, I'm sure there is a fee for the pavillion.
It's fairly near the course if I remember correctly?

If the tourney goes forward, I would love to play in it.
Last weekend in Sept or first in Oct is good on my end.

The pavilion is basically right in the middle of the course.
Permanent bathrooms with running water is also a plus.

Thanks to you for bringing up an idea we probably should've been thinking of already.

I was hoping to run some sort of grand opening event at Shen Creek once it was complete(fingers crossed, this year) and this might be the event.

I see the last weekend in Sept is the Masters Worlds so ... That might not work if local players will be lost to that important tourney.
First weekend in Oct is Battle of Saratoga so that weekend is out. Last weekend in August perhaps?
